Gospel to the Gentiles!
Imagine a cultural and religious development so shocking that it changes your entire view of the world. Think, for instance, that your status as the exclusive people of God changed overnight. Suddenly, the floodgates were opened, and anyone could be a member of God’s people. In addition, some of your most cherished religious rites were thrown aside in favor of new ones, and that these rites no longer set you apart as the people of God.
That is what the First Century Jews faced, especially those who became believers in Jesus. Circumcision was no longer a mark of God’s covenant, but completely optional. Gentiles were allowed in to fellowship. It would have been an amazing time, and a very confusing one.
At the same time, Gentiles became the amazed recipients of God’s grace. Paul recounts this transition throughout his epistles, but Ephesians 3 is where he really lays out this mystery. He states things like how the mystery of Christ is now revealed, and that “This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.” (3:6)
We have much to be thankful for as Christians. Let us not forget the amazing truth that we have access to God’s grace at all! Our God has saved us, undeserving sinners, and Gentiles to boot, and given us a place in the age to come.
