Brett Favre – the Biggest Issue

August 8, 2008

OK, so we’ve all heard about Brett Favre’s return, which makes me feel less old.  We’ve heard all sorts of things about this.  However, I noticed the biggest problem with this situation today.  This is something that will effect a huge percentage of NFL fans across the country.  What is it?

Simple.  Madden ’09 has Brett Favre on the cover, in a Packers jersey.  And now, Favre has made that useless less than two weeks before the release of the game.  For a game that curses people on its cover, Favre has certainly struck back by making the game look silly.  Also, chances are that Favre is on the Packers in the release version, and it will have to be updated (granted, that’s peanuts these days, but still a bit embarrassing).

Now, an important question will be answered.  Can a player be jinxed if Madden gets the cover wrong?  This will be the question to answer this NFL season.

I like Brett Favre and respect his decision to continue playing. However, Brett Favre has no idea what he has gotten himself into. The New York media is NOTHING like the Green Bay media which treated him like a legend and icon for many years. A few bad games (and there will be many of those) the media will be in his grill and poor Brett will quickly question WHY he came out of retirement. Good luck Brett!

Heh. While I agree that the New York media will not be kind to Brett, I think there are reasons to think he won’t be blindsided by them.

First off, he’s a “big boy”, so to speak. He knows what the New York media entails – he’s been around long enough to know the score. Secondly, the Jets aren’t the team that the New York media focuses on. They write about the Giants and their problems for the most part. Chad Pennington never got the negative press that Eli Manning gets. If the Giants do badly coming off a Super Bowl win, they New York media isn’t really going to care too much about Favre unless he is winning. The worst case scenario for Favre is the Giants doing well and the Jets doing poorly – that’s the case where the New York media is going to go after him.
